1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The first objective of this project is to improve ginning and textile processing performance by identifying the cultivar differences which affect performance and then identify parameters which are measurable in real-time to control for these differences. The second objective is to monitor energy use by several gins during the course of the ginning season to identify technologies and management strategies than can reduce energy requirements per bale.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
A wide variety of cultivars with some samples of the same cultivar grown under different conditions; or the same cultivar managed with different production and/or harvesting methods will be processed with different gin machines. Samples will be collected and their fiber quality properties measured. Due to the complexity of the problem the number of cultivars, and measurable parameters, not all possible combinations can be induced, so a representative subgroup will be selected. The data will be analyzed to determine variation due to cultivar and growing conditions for different ginning machines. Data will also be collected with alternative machine operating parameters to identify optimum settings for different cultivars and/or growth conditions. The work will proceed under controlled conditions using the ginning equipment at the Cotton Ginning Research Unit. Electricity use was monitored at several gins in 2010 and 2011. Fuel use in seed cotton dryers was determined in 2011 at two of these gins. Additional process parameters, such as temperature, humidity, feed control speeds, and static pressures across fans were also monitored. Analysis of this data will continue in 2012. Fuel and electricity use will be monitored again in at least two gins in 2012. The gins with fuel use monitoring equipment installed in 2011 experienced mostly dry weather during the ginning season. Additional data is needed to better quantify the effect of wet seed cotton on fuel and electricity use. Additionally, fuel used by humid air moisture restoration systems will be calculated.
3. Progress Report:
Ginning response related to additional parameters including cultivar and moisture content have been studied. Processing energy requirements and trash levels of the lint are two aspects which need further evaluation. Drying fuel use was monitored at commercial gins in addition to the monitoring of electrical energy use in FY 2012. Analysis of the data is underway.
