1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
1. Develop 2-5 soybean lines in maturity group II that have the combination of low palmitic acid, low linolenic acid, and high yield. 2. Develop progeny lines in maturity group II from which to select lines with combinations of high oleic acid and high yield, and low palmitic acid, low linolenic acid, or high stearic acid.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Soybean germplasm with low palmitic acid and germplasm with low linolenic acid contents obtained from Iowa State University have been used in our breeding program since 2002. Advanced selections with low palmitic acid were crossed with advanced lines with low linolenic acid to combine the two traits. The progenies from these crosses are at different stages of development. In the 2010-2011 winter, we evaluated over 5,000 most advanced F4 derived lines and identified over 100 lines with the combination of low (<4.5%) palmitic acid and low (<3.0%) linolenic acid. Thousands more progeny lines with potential combination of the two traits will be available for selection in the 2011-2012 winter. These lines will be analyzed for fatty acid composition using gas chromatography and the lines with the desired combination of low palmitic acid and low linolenic acid will be selected. The selected lines will be evaluated for yield at multiple locations and multiple years in the soybean production areas in Michigan. The best 2-5 lines will be selected for potential release.
3. Progress Report:
This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To discover novel genes/alleles in soybean for seed composition, determine their inheritance, determine genomic location, transfer to adapted germplasm, and release. This new research project has been active only since April 1, 2012. Over 7,500 lines derived from crosses to combine the desired traits of low palmitic acid, low linolenic acid, high oleic acid, and high yield were analyzed with Gas Chromatography. Over 100 lines with the desired fatty acid compositions were selected from these analyses. Some of these lines will also being evaluated for agronomic performance.
