1. Develop breeding populations integrating high oil and modified fatty acids with high yielding, acceptable protein content and/or other desired traits. 2. Develop and release new germplasms with high oil and improved fatty acid profiles, or high yielding varieties with improved oil and oil quality. 3. Identify and validate of breeder-friendly molecular markers associated with oil content and oil compositions.
Conventional breeding procedures will be predominantly employed. Cross new high oil, high oleic, low linolenic, and low saturates germplasms (e.g. IA1022 [SCN], FAD2 lines, SD05-767, M03-275035) to adapted high-yielding varieties/lines, and advance the generations by single seed descent. Individual plant selection will be used to eliminate inferior plants and/or for resistance in case pest/disease occurs. Near-infrared, MNR and/or gas chromatography methods will be used to analyze oil and fatty acids. Marker-assisted backcrossing will be used for high-oleic and/or low linolenic acids. Simple sequence repeat markers will be predominantly used for quantitative trait loci mapping with a recombinant inbred line population.
