Research Project: Optimizing the Production of Coho Salmon in RAS throgugh the Development of Cost-Effective, Fish Meal Free Feeds

Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research

2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop alternative, fish meal free feeds for coho salmon reared in recirculating aquaculture systems.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
The first experiment will compare diets types (ingredient groups) at different lipid levels in order to reduce visceral fat. Research will be conducted in the laboratory facilities in Bozeman, Montana and conditional approval for transfer of SweetSpring salmon eggs to the facility has been approved by the Montana department of Fish Wildlife and Parks.

3. Progress Report:
This technology and concepts developed in the parent project are being applied to this project. The benefit of this is that if plant-based feeds can be effectively used by a variety of species, farmer acceptance and the cost of the diets will decrease. A study was completed that evaluated various soybean products and lipid levels in the diet of Coho salmon. Results demonstrated that fish meal is not required for optimum growth and salmon fed several of the fish meal free soy containing diets grew as quickly as the salmon fed the fish meal control diet or the commercial reference diet.
