The objective of this cooperative research project is to promote and facilitate cooperative research projects where the interests of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Wisconsin Water Science Center (WI WSC) and Agricultural Research Service (ARS) coincide and support individual project needs of both agencies.

The parties will work together to develop a collaborative environmental microbiology laboratory.
3. Progress Report:
This agreement addresses two objectives of the parent project. Objective 2: Determine the effects of dairy manure management practices and cropping systems on crop production, soil properties, and loss of nutrients, sediment, and pathogens (e.g. Cryptosporidium parvum, Salmonella spp., and bovine diarrhea virus) in surface runoff or atmospheric emissions. Objective 5: Develop improved methods for detection and quantification of pathogens in manure, forages, and surface runoff and evaluate effects of management practices on pathogen transport and survival. The four edge-of-field samplers for the long-term paired watershed runoff study located at the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station were updated during the winter of 2012-2013. Updates include completely automated sampling by remote telemetry, automated pH adjustment for optimal pathogen capture on glass wool filters, pressure transducers and valves to monitor back pressure and switch to a second filter in the event of clogging, tipping bucket flow meters to avoid the clogging typical of conventional impeller meters, and new data loggers and software. The new installations allow accurate flow-weighted sampling for agricultural zoonotic pathogens in runoff, which then can be translated to true loading rates and fluxes.
