Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory2013 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this agreement is to develop methods to map burn area associated with agricultural fields in Russia and to assess emissions of black carbon from agricultural burning.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
ARS will meet with operational agencies to determine science needs and acquire remotely sensed data. Both parties will jointly determine the best approach for processing remotely sensed data and integrating in situ information. The cooperator will implement the agreed upon approach and both parties will analyze and present study results.
3. Progress Report:
This agreement is funding graduate student and GIS technical support in development of remote approaches to detect and quantify burn area on croplands located in Russia. Good progress has been made on the development of basic algorithms needed to implement a MODIS based product which detects agricultural fires. Very high resolution (VHR) imagery was acquired for the region and new VHR acquisitions have been tasked for different focus areas in Russia. Work has also proceeded on development of high quality cropland maps for agriculturally active regions in Russia.
