Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory2013 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective is to produce maps indicating cover crop biomass and link those maps to nutrient uptake and evaluate impacts of agronomic parameters on cover crop performance.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
ARS will meet with operational agencies to determine science needs and acquire remotely sensed data. Both parties will jointly determine the best approach for processing remotely sensed data and integrating in situ information. The cooperator will implement the agreed upon approach and both parties will analyze and present study results.
3. Progress Report:
Under this project satellite calibration for nutrient uptake by winter cover crops continued to be refined. This effort involved collection of cover crop samples during the winter and spring periods and related biomass measurements to spectral information in satellite images. Additional effort included determining the utility of atmospheric corrections for improving calibrations. State wide implementation of satellite monitoring of cover crop performance requires development of software tools for capturing of geospatial data and for data analyses within the geospatial context. Substantial progress was made on the development and refinement of these tools.
