Research Project: Evaluation of Canal Point (CP) Cultivars for Yield Parameters and Disease Susceptibility in Nicaragua

Location: Sugarcane Field Station

2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
To develop sugarcane clones with high-yielding disease-resistance potential and evaluation for sugar production.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Sugarcane seedlings will be produced from high-yielding disease-resistant parental clones with wide adaptation. Superior clones with high vigor, growth and freedom from diseases will be selected and established in yield trials to identify superior clones.

3. Progress Report:
This research relates to inhouse objective 2: Develop better agronomic practices for the Florida sugarcane industry. Fifty CP-clones were shipped to Ingenio Monte Rosa, S. A., in Nicaragua for yield and disease evaluation. CP-clones imported to Nicaragua in 2012 germinated and are in quarantine. CP 06-2400 shows commercial potential in trials at Monte Rosa in Nicaragua.
