Research Project: Evaluation of CP Cultivars for Yield Parameters and Disease Susceptibility in Guatemala

Location: Sugarcane Field Station

2012 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop sugarcane clones with high sucrose-yielding disease-resistance potential for evaluation of sugar production.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Sugarcane seedlings will be produced from high sucrose-yielding disease-resistant parental clones with wide adaptation. Superior clones with high vigor, growth and freedom from diseases will be selected and established in yield trials to identify superior sucrose producing clones.

3. Progress Report:
Forty seven CP-clones were shipped to CENGICANA in Guatemala for yield and disease evaluation. Since the introduction of orange rust of sugarcane in Guatemala in 2008, their sugarcane industry decreased the acreage of CP 72-2086 from 65 % of the acreage to 32 % and CP 88-1165 acreage increased from 10 % in 2010 to 34 % and yielded 9 % more than CP 72-2086.
