Location: Water Reuse and Remediation Research2013 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
To enable joint research of mutual interest in the areas of the Salinity Laboratory mission.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
To conduct cooperative research compatible with the Salinity Laboratory and interests of university entities.
3. Progress Report:
This Agreement is a statement of general cooperation between the Salinity Laboratory and University of California, Riverside (UCR), and as such it relates to all objectives of all research projects at the Salinity Laboratory, including objectives of parent project 5310-61000-016-00D. In cooperation with Agricultural Operations, Department of Botany and Plant Science and Department of Environmental Science at UCR, we initiated a field evaluation of salt tolerance of 7 rootstocks of avocado. The experiment consists of two blocks; one a control irrigated with Gage Canal water and the other irrigated with saline water with EC= 1.5 dS/m and a chloride concentration of 175 mg/L). Plants were previously transplanted. We conducted a preliminary analysis of soil salinity and water content in both blocks to establish initial conditions. We collected and analyzed soil samples and conducted an electrical resistivity survey of the experimental plot. Avocado leaves were also sampled for ion analysis. We will measure tree growth parameters, gas exchange measurements, leaf ion composition and soil salinity at the end of each of the next two summers.
