1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
To provide live-insect evaluation of a new prototype production version of the patented Backus-Bennett AC-DC EPG monitor design to be built by ARS-FLA, Inc.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
ARS-FLA, Inc. will build a prototype AC-DC EPG monitor, based on designs provided by EPG Equipment Co. ARS-FLA, Inc. will send the prototype to ARS, Parlier, CA, for evaluation of its effectiveness in recording feeding behavior of 2-3 representative species of piercing-sucking insect vectors. The ARS scientist will write a report, and iteratively test modified designs (if necessary) until a working, marketable monitor is completed.
3. Progress Report:
This study is in support of Objective 3 of the parent project. ARS-FLA, Inc. has nearly finished building their prototype AC-DC EPG monitor, based on design provided by EPG Equipment Co. ARS-FLA has modified the design to correct problems and missing data from the EPG Equipment Co. designs. Evaluation of the equipment using live insects has begun. Head stage amplifier and power supply design was tested with Asian citrus psyllid and black citrus aphid, in cooperation with collaborators at the University of Florida. Modifications of the operational amplifier in the head stage amplifier were accomplished. Final evaluations of the entire prototype monitor, with Asian citrus psyllid, black citrus aphid, cotton melon aphid and glassy-winged sharpshooter, will begin in July and be completed by the end of September 2012.
