1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Discover new biological control agents in Italy and develop methods with which they can be used to suppress the invasive insect pests, Citrus Longhorned Beetle (CLB) and Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB).
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Two related approaches will be utilized: 1/ Discover and characterize new species of natural enemies by conducting foreign exploration in the CLB-infected area of Italy. 2/ Conduct basic biological, behavioral, genetic and ecological studies to evaluate impact of natural enemies on target pests and non-targets using various laboratory and field study methods, and evaluating the impact of environmental factors which limit or increase their effectiveness.

3. Progress report: 0212-22000-024-08T: This incoming agreement was established with the Italian agency MINOPRIO to support cooperative research in France and Italy on citrus and Asian longhorned beetles. During FY2012, a release technique was developed for an egg parasitoid of CLB in Northern Italy. An analysis of within-gallery temperature data over the course of an entire year in trees infested with CLB was conducted to validate a degree-day model for beetle development. Studies of hibernation by diapausing CLB egg parasitoids in actual outdoor conditions were started in order to improve the parasitoid’s survival rate while in diapause. Exploration in NE and SW China was conducted and an egg parasitoid of citrus longhorned beetle was found in Southern China.
