1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
MyPyramid Equivalents Database is updated with each release of national dietary data to provide the analytical basis to evaluate diets based on the food group recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. With the recent replacement of the MyPyramid, the MPED is now named USDA Food Patterns Equivalents Database (USDA, FPED). While the USDA/ARS Food Surveys Research Group has initiated a new process to allow updates to be released at the same time as the release of dietary intake data, resources are needed to support the release of database updates to correspond with prior dietary intake data releases to identify trends over time. The objectives for supporting the retooling of the USDA, FPED are: 1) to provide USDA, FPED updates for past WWEIA, NHANES cycles in a timely manner; 2) to reflect changes introduced in USDA Food Group assignments as a result of the new recommendations contained in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans; and 3) to provide timely information for the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Advisory Committee. The Cooperator has the expertise to provide scientific consultation and will assist with provision of resources to accomplish these objectives.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
ARS is currently retooling the USDA, FPED methodology. ARS will review all food codes (7,000+) in the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) for the respective past surveys to determine the appropriate amounts of each of the 30+ food groups present in each FNDDS food code. ARS will meet with the Cooperator to ensure that the food group assignments are consistent with the current dietary guidelines; and the Cooperator will provide scientific consultation and resources to ARS as needed.

3. Progress Report:
This agreement is to provide scientific consultation and partial resources from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for the retooling and development of the 2005-2006 Food Patterns Equivalents Database (FPED). The Food Surveys Research Group (FSRG) has responsibility for the development of the FPED to correspond with specific data releases of national survey dietary data. The FPED, used to evaluate diets based on the food guidance recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, provides delineation of 7,000 foods and beverages from national dietary survey data into 37 specifically defined components and their equivalent amounts as prescribed in the USDA Food Guidance System. FPED development is being retooled in order to provide the FPED for each two-year release of What We Eat in America, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (WWEIA, NHANES) at the time of data release or shortly thereafter. Redesign of the development process is focused on not only timeliness but also assurance of translation of foods to Dietary Guidelines 2010 policies. Quarterly meetings were held in 2012 and 2013 with immediate users of FPED that included scientists from CNPP as well as the National Cancer Institute to provide review and input into the strategic changes for retooling and redesign of FPED, and scientific consultation to assure that food component delineations were being applied as prescribed in the USDA Food Patterns and in concert with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The redesign process is complete. As part of that process, the redesign of developing the FPED was applied to WWEIA, NHANES 2003-2004. The redesigned FPED 2003-2004 was compared to the previous MyPyramid Equivalents Database (MPED) 2003-2004, and the results were in agreement. The new redesign process has been applied to WWEIA, NHANES 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 data. Release of FPED 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 has been completed. Each release has several products including 1) a Food Patterns Equivalents Ingredient Database of each unique ingredient in FNDDS, 2) a database of the amounts of 37 Food Pattern (FP) components present per 100 grams of each FNDDS food and beverage, 3) the amount of 37 FP components present in each food and beverage reported and the total for the day by each respondent on day 1 and day 2 of WWEIA, NHANES, 4) four summary table sets on the mean intakes of the 37 FP components by 23 age-gender and socioeconomic subgroups, and 5) a Methodology and User Guide. Development of FPED 2005-2006 and 2011-2012 is underway. Release of FPED 2011-2012 is planned for the summer of 2014, shortly after WWEIA, NHANES 2010-2012 data release. Release of FPED 2005-2006, including the four products described above, is planned for early 2015.
