Research Project: Evaluating Spring and Winter Barley Breeding Material in the Magic Valley

Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research

2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Test barley breeding lines for adaptation to growing conditions in the Magic Valley of south central Idaho.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Breeding lines from the ARS-Aberdeen program will be sown in October (winter habit lines) and March (spring habit lines). Winter lines will be harvested and in late July and the spring lines will be harvested in August.

3. Progress Report:
Progress in this project helped further Objective 1 in the parent project aimed at developing barley with improved stress resistance and enhanced end-use quality. Winter barley test plots were planted in the 2012-2013 season at a cooperator’s farm near Twin Falls Idaho. The materials include advanced lines for the malt, food, and feed barley markets. A total of 980 plots were planted for spring barley lines. The materials in the spring nursery included advanced generations of malting and food barley lines. In addition, a nursery was planted for the Brewers Association to assess the suitability of our best lines for the craft beer industry.
