Discover, evaluate, and develop pesticides and application techniques that improve protection of deployed military personnel from biting arthropods that transmit pathogens.
1) Evaluate and formulate palatable baits for rodents that are known reservoirs of pathogens known to cause Leishmaniasis in humans. 2) Evaluate feed-through chemicals in rodent baits to control phlebotomine sand flies. Feed through insecticides should kill sand fly larvae in rodent droppings and/or adult sand flies feeding on rodent following ingestion of chemical containing bait. System effect should be for as long a period of time as possible. 3) Conduct field trials and otherwise evaluate rodent feed through insecticides and/or attractive toxic sugar baits for efficacy against wild phlebotomine sand fly populations. 4) Conduct lab trials as need. 5) Work with partners to develop promising candidates through evaluation, formulation, EPA registration, licensing agreements and marketing.
