2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop and release new MG4-6 conventional and RR breeding lines with high protein, high sucrose, low stachyose, low phytate, and high yield potential as variety or germplasm.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Develop and test, using conventional breeding methodology, a large number of lines and breeding populations for combining high protein, high digestible sugars, low oligosaccharides, and low phytate in the elite background. Our goal is for the yield level of the best high protein and low phytate lines to be comparable to popular commercial varieties. We will also develop a number of lines with low phytate and/or low stachyose without seed germination problems.

3. Progress Report:
This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To characterize the biological mechanisms that control phytic acid concentration in soybean seed, and determine the impact of genetically lowering phytic acid on seed and seedling vigor, soy protein functionality and soybean meal digestibility. A total of 32 advanced lines were evaluated in 2012 high protein final test in 3 Arkansas locations (Pine Tree, Marianna, and Rohwer) with 3 reps. Five of them (R09-3789, R10-5795, R09-3879, R10-6276, and R08-3377) had high protein (45-50%) with competitive yield (92-102% of check; Osage, AG4907, AG5606; 66 bu/ac) and will be tested in the 2013 maturity group 5 regional quality traits test. In addition, R09-3513 with 48% protein and 87% check yield will be tested in 2013 the maturity group 4 regional quality traits test. Also, a total of 13 advanced lines were evaluated in 2012 phytate and sugar final test in 3 Arkansas locations with 3 reps. These lines yielded from 60 to 93% of check average (AG4907 and AG5606; 49.7 bushels per acre (bu/ac).
