Research Project: Develop High-Yielding Mg4-6 Soybean Cultivars/ Germplasm with High Protein, Low Phytate, and Desirable Sugars for the Meal Market

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-068-14-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2011
End Date: Mar 31, 2014

Develop and release new MG4-6 conventional and RR breeding lines with high protein, high sucrose, low stachyose, low phytate, and high yield potential as variety or germplasm.

Develop and test, using conventional breeding methodology, a large number of lines and breeding populations for combining high protein, high digestible sugars, low oligosaccharides, and low phytate in the elite background. Our goal is for the yield level of the best high protein and low phytate lines to be comparable to popular commercial varieties. We will also develop a number of lines with low phytate and/or low stachyose without seed germination problems.
