1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop and release maturity group (MG) 00, 0 and I lines with 1-3% higher protein and competitive yield; MG 00, 0, I lines with 3-6% higher protein, higher protein lines with hazard resistance, MG 00, 0, I lines with lower phytate and 1-3% higher protein, MG 00, 0, I lines with higher MET, CYS, THR, LYS.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Cross higher protein lines with higher yielding lines, advance populations via in-breeding, select plants/lines with higher protein and/or lower phytate, yield test selected lines.
3. Progress Report:
This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To discover novel genes/alleles in soybean for seed composition, determine their inheritance, determine genomic location, transfer to adapted germplasm, and release. In the 2012 yield trials, high protein lines (a total of 50 lines, some with large seed size) had protein contents that range from 36-46% protein (on a 13% moisture basis) and yields that average above the mean with a range of 95-120%. Five lines are suggested for use by others in crossing. They are: M06-289237, a maturity group 0 line with about 2% higher protein soybean cyst nematode (SCN) resistance and a yield of 96% of the best check, M06-247098, a maturity group 00 line which has about 2% higher protein SCN resistance and a yield of 99% of the best check, M06R-614016, a maturity group 0 Roundup Ready line averaging about 2% higher protein SCN resistance with a yield of 94% of the best check, M06-320002, a maturity group 00 line with about 4% protein and a yield of 95% of the checks, and M02-366027 a maturity group I line with a protein content of about 2% higher and a yield of 98% of the best check. Nuclear Infrared Resonance (NIR) is used for selecting higher protein plants to be planted in plant rows for 2013.
