Location: Beneficial Insects Introduction Research2013 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Study emerald ash borers and associated parasitoids.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Ash logs and/or other plant and insect samples will be collected, stored, and sampled to investigate the biology and behavior of the emerald ash borer and associated parasitoids.
3. Progress Report:
A total of 10 Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)-infested ash trees were felled and debarked from five forest sites (two trees per site) for recovery of previously released biocontrol agents during the winter and early spring of 2013. One biocontrol agent, Tetrastichus planipennisi, was recovered from two of the five release sites, where it had been released between 2009 and 2010. In addition, ARS researchers at Newark, Delaware assisted in the development of sampling procedures for evaluation of the establishment, dispersal and impact of released biocontrol agents against EAB populations in Maryland. At the same time, Maryland Department of Agriculture helped ARS with collecting, storing, and sampling EAB infested ash logs for recovery of EAB adults and associated parasitoids.
