Research Project: Natural Products for Controlling Red Imported Fire Ants

Location: Biological Control of Pests Research

2013 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Develop new fire ant control products using new and existing toxicants and behavior modifying compounds.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Identifying active compounds from plants and other natural materials in South China, which are potentially useful in managing fire ants in the United States.

3. Progress Report:
Tropical fire ant is a significant competitor to the imported fire ants. They use toxic alkaloids in their competition with imported fire ants. The defensive compounds of tropical fire ants can be a source of potential new natural chemicals for controlling fire ants. Tropical fire ants were collected from China and the profile of their defensive chemicals has been analyzed. GHA is a strain name.
