The objective of this collaborative project is to make georeferenced, bee specimen data from the U.S. National Pollinating Insects Collection, USDA-ARS Bee Biology and Systematics Laboratory, and four other major U.S. collections of bees, available to the research community.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Work will focus on data cleaning of the existing specimen level database of bees from the U.S. National Pollinating Insects Collection, data capture of identified specimens that are not yet digitized, and georeferencing all localities. Specimens will be given unique matrix code numbers, label data will be entered into a relational database with authority files for bee species and plant taxa. Georeferenced bee data will be provided with locality, date, and floral associations except for rare plant taxa.
3. Progress Report:
The goal of this project is to complete the development of a georeferenced relational database of all determined bees in the U.S. National Pollinating Insects Collection and make that data available through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. As a result researchers and the public will have access to the collections’ wealth of information on the distribution and biology of the most important group of terrestrial pollinators. During the past twelve months 135,952 records have been added to the dataset. This work resulted in a complete record of all digger bees of the genus Anthophora, all western hemisphere Anthidiini (resin and carder bees), and orchid bees of the genus Eulaema housed in the Pollinating Insect Research Unit’s U. S. National Pollinating Insect Collection. The database currently has more than 1.1 million records, of which 901,146 are bees and approximately 200,000 are unidentified specimens or non-bee flower visitors. Monitoring activities include telephone calls, email communication and discussions at professional meetings.
