1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
To obtain efficacy and residual data of insecticides, miticides, herbicides and fungicides on vegetable crops and ornamentals against insects and mites.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Field evaluations of insecticides, miticides, fungicides, and herbicides will be conducted on vegetable and ornamental crops. Research will be conducted according to IR-4 protocols and good laboratory practices. No specific treatments can be mentioned ahead of time because program needs change depending on industry requests. Residue samples will be assayed by appropriate federal, state, or private laboratories.
3. Progress Report:
Field data were collected in cooperation with the IR-4 Project (formerly named Interregional Research Project #4) and cooperating crop protection industries. The IR-4 project is a national minor use pesticide program. Residue and performance trials with insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides were completed for 14 food crop studies, and fungicide, and insecticide performance trials were completed for 20 ornamental crop studies. Crop samples were provided to cooperators for pesticide residue analyses, and completed field data books were provided to the IR-4 Project headquarters. This work supports registration of needed pest control compounds on specialty crops, and the pesticides will ultimately be available for use by growers.
1. Research Supported the Registration of Pesticides on Vegetable and Ornamental Crops. Because of limited pest control options for growers, research was conducted to support the registration of pesticides on vegetable and ornamental crops. ARS researchers collected data at Charleston, SC (USDA, ARS, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory) in cooperation with the IR-4 Project (formerly named Interregional Research Project #4) and with cooperating crop protection industries. The IR-4 Project is a national minor use pesticide program headquartered at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Research with insecticides, herbicides and fungicides were completed for 14 food crop studies (11 residue studies on basil, cucumber, lettuce, peanut, peas, spinach, squash, and tomato; and 3 performance studies on basil, pepper and tomato); also, fungicide and insecticide performance experiments were completed for 20 ornamental studies. Results from this work are being used to support the registration of needed insecticides, herbicides and fungicides on specialty crops, and the pesticides will subsequently be available for use by growers.
