2012 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
Determine the amount, persistence, and fate of pest insect control chemicals and their toxic breakdown products in minor agricultural crops in the United States. Provide data in support of registration/re-registration petitions to EPA through IR-4 Minor Use Program.

1b. Approach (from AD-416):
Minor agricutural crops treated with insect control chemicals such as pyrethroids, organophosphates and carbamates will be chemically analyzed to determine the amount, persistence and distribution of these chemicals and their breakdown products. The data collected will be forwarded through designated channels and used to estabish tolerances and obtain registration for the use of these chemicals on minor crops. Also, new efficient procedures for the extraction, cleanup, and determination of residues of these pesticides in crops will be developed to more rapidly expedite these registration processes.

3. Progress Report:
In FY12, residue data collection completed for 4 pesticide projects with 240 crop samples from 34 different field sites. There are currently two pesticide projects being analyzed which should be completed prior to October 1. These projects total 94 crop samples from 17 different field trials. It is anticipated in FY13 there will be residue data collection for 4 pesticide projects with approximately 30 different field sites for a total of 175 samples.

4. Accomplishments
1. Food quality and pesticides use in crops. Because of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), pesticides for use on minor crops are increasingly being removed from the marketplace. ARS researchers at Yakima Agricultural Research Laboratory Insect Resistance unit, Wapato, WA, assisted in obtaining minor use and specialty use pesticide clearances and maintenance of current registrations by analyzing crops for pesticide residues. This past year, ARS researchers, at Wapato, WA, completed the residue data collection for 6 pesticide projects with 334 crop samples from a total of 51 different field sites. This provided data for 6 separate pesticide label registration proposals, which will eventually be sent on to the Environmental Protection Agency, making up part of an overall project aimed at giving farmers, market access to targeted pesticides for use on their minor crops.
