1a. Objectives (from AD-416)
To develop a filter treatment system (containing modified iron) and pesticides from agricultural drainage waters.
1b. Approach (from AD-416)
Laboratory contaminant batch tests, saturated hydraulic conductivity tests, and saturated solute transport tests, followed by field pilot tests, will be used to develop filter treatment systems (containing modified iron) capable of removing nutrient and pesticide contaminants from drainage waters.
3. Progress Report
A laboratory investigation (hydraulic conductivity, batch, and column tests) were carried out to evaluate the capability of a porous iron composite filter material to remove arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, and selenium from water. Results indicate that the porous iron composite filter material works well for water treatment of cadmium, chromium, copper, and lead by removing almost 100% of these four contaminants. Furthermore, a small-scale water treatment filter system containing porous iron composite was designed, fabricated, and then tested for hydraulic efficiency. Additionally, a manuscript was submitted to a scientific journal, which details the capability of porous iron composite to remove nitrate, phosphate, and atrazine from agricultural drainage waters. The Authorized Departmental Officer's Designated Representative, through e-mail correspondence, phone conversations, and site visits, maintains close contact with North American Höganäs, Inc. collaborators, thereby ensuring that project objectives are achieved.
