To provide the evidence base for improving the vitamin and mineral status of lactating women and their infants.

Measure vitamin and mineral status of lactating women and their infants, given a placebo vs. a micronutrient-rich, lipid-based supplement; existing samples will be used from 300 women-infant pairs in Malawi.
3. Progress Report
This project began 9 months late due to problems locating and selecting samples at the CDC. In FY2011 samples from mother and child at baseline and at 6 months postpartum arrived at the WHNRC and were analyzed in 1076 mother child pairs for vitamin B12, folate, ferritin, C- reactive protein, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, and soluble transferrin receptor. The infant samples (494) matched at 6 and 9 months of age have been analyzed for vitamin B12, folate, ferritin, C- reactive protein, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, and soluble transferrin receptor. The last shipment of samples (924) from mothers postpartum has been received and organized. The samples will be analyzed for the same compounds. Retinol binding protein (RBP) in all the maternal and infant plasma samples and retinol in breast milk have been added to the planned analyses and the RBP measurements are in progress. A major focus of the research in FY2011 has been the development of new methods for simultaneous B vitamins in breast milk. Using mass spectrometry, we can now analyze simultaneously vitamins B1, B2, B6 and niacin in both breast milk and plasma. A new method for vitamin B12 in breast milk has been added to the lab but further work in FY2012 is needed to determine if this can be included in the multiple vitamin assay.
