Research Project: Developing Practical Strategies for Using Pyriproxyfen Against the Asian Tiger Mosquito, Aedes Albopictus

Location: Animal Production and Protection

Project Number: 0208-32000-001-38-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 17, 2010
End Date: Feb 16, 2015

Establish the effectiveness and safety of the growth regulator, pyriproxifen, for control of the Asian tiger mosquito.

Autodissemination of pyriproxifen, wherein treating a small area results in far wider coverage, offers economic and environmental benefits. We propose operational research in which autodissemination moves toward implementation and is extended to Ae. albopictus. Scale-up experiments on efficacy will result in strategies using available products and equipment. We will also conduct risk analysis on autodissemination by establishing autodissemination distance from the source site, transfer to non-target water, and residue concentrations. Our data will aid us in efforts to modify the label.
