2011 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416)
To control the soybean cyst nematode using new approaches including molecular biology and transformation techniques.

1b. Approach (from AD-416)
DNA vectors will be designed for transformation of DNA fragments into soybean to control the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) so that it will not grow or will not complete its life cycle. The transformed soybean roots will be tested to determine the effect of the DNA fragments on SCN vigor.

3. Progress Report
Cyst nematode proteins were extracted from young nematodes before they entered the soybean root. The proteins were studied and identified using protein identification tools. Information on 754 cyst nematode proteins was obtained and entered into the World-2D PAGE Repository database. In other research, proteins were isolated from roots infected with nematodes at 0, 3, 8, and 15 days after inoculation and the proteins were characterized. Some of these proteins may be of interest in developing resistance of plants to nematodes, which is the goal of the parent project.
