Location: Food Components and Health Laboratory2010 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416)
Through a joint USARIEM/MRMC and BHNRC/USDA biomedical research initiative, develop practical biomedical models of human energy metabolism.
1b. Approach (from AD-416)
USDA’s BHNRC will host an applied mathematician supported as a MRMC TATRC-funded IPA from the University of Tennessee. As a visiting scientist at BHNRC/USDA to jointly develop advanced mathematical models to predict the water and metabolic fuel requirements of physically active humans.
3. Progress Report
This agreement serves to combine the expertise of ARS in conducting nutrition studies of energy regulation with the exercise physiology expertise of the Department of Exercise Science at George Washington University and the mathematical modeling expertise and interests of USAIREM. The current protocol involves the recruitment of an elderly population of insulin insensitive subjects. Collection of data on the impact of light physical activity on glucose regulation and fuel management has proceeded and will be used as part of the dataset for mathematical modeling of energy substrate utilization. Activities and progress of this Agreement are monitored through frequent conference calls between the three collaborators as well as periodic meetings.
