Identify repellents or attractants that could be used to manage the Asian citrus psyllid.
1b. Approach (from AD-416)
Cooperator will provide ARS with various guava essence fractions, which ARS will screen for repellency or attractancy to the psyllid using olfactometer and EAD/EAG studies. Cooperator will further fractionate active fractions, and ARS will screen these as well. The chemical nature of any repellents or attractants found will be determined, if possible.
3. Progress Report
This project is related to inhouse objective 3c: Investigate basic biology and ecology of the Asian citrus psyllid and its natural enemies in Florida citrus. The attraction/repellency of Asian citrus psyllid to a blend of volatiles primarily from guava was evaluated. There was some evidence the psyllid was attracted to the blend in four-arm olfactometer studies, but this attraction could not be confirmed in vertical Y-tube olfactometer experiments. Five constituents of the blend are being evaluated to determine if they elicit antennal responses by males and females. A number of volatiles associated with citrus have been identified that elicit antennal responses, and we have requested pure samples of these from the cooperator for further testing. Progress was monitored through direct involvement in lab and field activities, research meetings, and discussions with collaborators at U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory (USHRL) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service - Plant Protection Quarantine (APHIS-PPQ), telephone calls and email communications.
