Enhance soft white and club wheat germplasm for traits that reduce production risk in Northeast Oregon, and for milling and baking quality traits that enhance the value of soft white and club wheat in the export market.
1b. Approach (from AD-416)
Field trials of advanced breeding lines from the USDA-ARS wheat breeding project, located in Pullman, WA, will be established at four locations in NW OR. Those trials will be evaluated for agronomic characteristics, grain yield, and quality factors. In the greenhouse and laboratory, breeding lines will be evaluated for traits that are associated with enhanced production in hot, dry environments. Replaces 5348-21220-003-03S (12/08). 3. Progress Report
Breeding club wheat for Oregon. The problem is that the climate and soils of NE Oregon are different from those of Washington and require a special effort to develop club and soft white wheat cutlivars for that region. We evaluated club wheat breeding lines for coleptile length in the growth chamber and for agronomic performance and disease resistance at at four locations in north east Oregon. Several breeding lines have longer coleoptiles and better emergence than prciously grown cultivars as well asbetter agronomic performance in excellent club wheat end use quality. The release of new club wheat cultivars for Oregon will give growers another market opportunity for an export market for their wheat crop. This research is monitored by the ADODR through visits to the research plots in Oregon during field days, and through emails and phone calls to the cooperator in Oregon during the rest of the year.
