The objective of this cooperative research project is to operate a fall and winter rice nursery for the purpose of advancing plant generations and seed increase.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
The Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center (DBNRRC) of the USDA, ARS, SPA will provide rice seed stock for increase and harvest the plots. The Cooperator will plant and manage the research plots during the growing season.
3. Progress Report:
The Puerto Rico winter nursery was successfully used to advance two rice mapping populations that are being used to map genes for straighthead resistance and grain arsenic elimination. These included 569 progeny lines that were from the F8 generation. In addition some 500 germplasm lines from the National Small Grains Collection (NSGC) that had low seed inventories were grown for seed rejuvenation and increase. This seed was provided to the NSGC distribution site in Aberdeen, ID. In addition, 222 diverse genetic materials from the NSGC Core Collection were rejuvenated. These rice accessions are distributed worldwide because they are part of a subset of germplasm lines that are representative of the entire diversity found among the 18,000 accessions in the NSGC. Pure seed sources of two cultivars were increased that are part of a feeding trial study to determine the impact of health beneficial compounds found in rice bran on cancer cell growth and changes in gut biota. Seed was also increased of a basmati-derived accession that was being considered for commercialization potential in the southern USA. The cooperator accurately planted the materials, managed the field during the growing season, provided facilities and expertise for harvesting and processing the seed, and coordinated seed inspection with APHIS authorities prior to shipment of the seed to Arkansas.
