1a. Objectives (from AD-416):
The objective of this effort is to support the engagement of USDA collaborative research with ILRI and National research institutions engaged in research that addresses the development of new generation vaccines, diagnostic tests, management strategies and drugs for diseases of critical importance including Rift Valley fever (RVF), MCF, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), and other diseases of strategic importance.
1b. Approach (from AD-416):
ILRI will participate in and help support activities that underpin the establishment and implementation of collaborative research and supporting activities, such as establishing sub agreements with relevant NARS, developing publications, co-organizing and supporting attendance at meetings and facilitating working groups that support research cooperation that would help to meet the objective. These activities will be identified in consultation with, and under the agreement of, the ADODR and ARS cooperators.
3. Progress Report:
ARS collaborations with TEAGASC continued to be very fruitful this year. (1) A collaborative, non-funded effort with TEAGASC (agreement 1265-31000-098-33N) in Meath has integrated the Bovine Gene Atlas tag dataset (gene expression database for cattle) with gene map information to the TEAGASC InnateDB (a database storing gene interaction information for hypothesis building), in an attempt to test the functionality of this extensive gene expression dataset. ARS provided annotation expertise for this project. (2) Phage cultures against Vibrio tubiashii were reported to the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, County Cork, Ireland (Teagasc) for DNA sequencing. Sequencing efforts are underway and should lead to a joint publication. (3) ARS researchers in Wyndmoor, PA collaborate with Teagasc, Ashtown Food Research Centre and at the University College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland, on the development of genetic-based typing methods for E. coli. Scientists jointly published collaborative research in scientific journals, exchanged bacterial strains and other needed materials and information. (4) ARS is collaborating with TEAGASC under an agreement to determine the gene expression changes in immune cells during the progression of mastitis using state-of-the-art RNA sequencing technology. This project’s goal is to provide a comprehensive molecular understanding of the effect of an infection on the bovine immune system. This understanding is a necessary precursor to the next generation of therapeutics that will be based on our understanding of cellular functions at the genetic level.
