2011 Annual Report

1a. Objectives (from AD-416)
To provide quantitative information and analytical tools that can be used to evaluate the impact of selected grazingland conservation practices on natural resource values.

1b. Approach (from AD-416)
The objective will be achieved by improving inventorying and monitoring techniques and conducting field measurements of the impacts of forage harvest management, vegetative seeding, grazing systems, and other conservation practices on soil and water quality including the movement of nutrients and particulate matter and significant changes in biodiversity.

3. Progress Report
Protocols for the pastureland National Resource Inventory were evaluated, modified, and presented at the USDA-NRCS pastureland pilot study training session at Harrisonburg, VA, May 3-5, 2011. The updated protocols are being used for the 2011 pasture NRI sampling campaign for both new states and those that began sampling in previous years. Participation in the newly-formed Pasture NRI Analysis Team will ensure that sampling meets NRCS objectives and that data are analyzed and employed correctly to meet scientific and management goals.
