Location: Dairy and Functional Foods Research2009 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416)
Commercial scale-up and animal (swine) testing (feeding trial) of pectic oligosaccharides with prebiotic properties.
1b. Approach (from AD-416)
ECONUGENICS will be responsible for obtaining at least 10 kg of POS. ARS (collaboration with Bob Rastall) will perform in vitro prebiotic property analysis. Once 10 kg of POS with in vitro prebiotic properties is delivered, ARS will perform a swine feeding trial to examine prebiotic properties in these animals.
3. Progress Report
Nine citrus peel fractions from a commercial citrus juice producer were purified and characterized. Thirteen samples were analyzed for in vitro prebiotic activity. Further purification is under way to improve prebiotic activity. The company requested that the CRADA be extended and a revised statement of work is under development. Research progress was monitored by telephone calls and e-mail.
