Location:2008 Annual Report
1a. Objectives (from AD-416)
Evaluation of wheat quality in entries from the regional wheat nurseries of the eastern U.S. in 2007 and 2008. Evaluation of early crop samples prior to fall planting decisions.
1b. Approach (from AD-416)
Evaluation of regional wheat nurseries of the eastern U.S. in 2007 and 2008. Within each year grain samples will be received at the SWQL from regional nursery coordinators and evaluated at the laboratory by Ohio State University technicians using standard American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) methods for grain milling and flour evaluation. Quality evaluations will be submitted to staff at the SWQL for summary and delivery to the cooperators before the end of the calendar year in which they are submitted. Nurseries include the Eastern Uniform Soft Winter Wheat Performance Nursery, the Southern Regional Performance Nursery, the Gulf and Western Nursery, the Eastern Soft White Winter Wheat Nursery. Summaries of information will be posted on the web by SWQL for use by researchers and the public. Evaluation of early crop samples prior to fall planting decisions. Agronomists with Ohio State University will submit samples in July of each year for wheat quality evaluation. Quality evaluations will be submitted to staff at the SWQL for summary and delivery to the cooperators before the end of August in the calendar year in which they are submitted.
3. Progress Report
This grant achieved its objective in providing timely wheat quality data for regional nurseries grown by researchers in the eastern US. The Ohio State University staff working within the Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory produced quality data for the Uniform Eastern Soft Wheat Nursery, the Uniform Southern Nursery of soft red winter wheat, the Mason-Dixon Regional Nursery of soft red winter wheat, and the Gulf and Western Regional Nursery of soft red winter wheat. The data for the nurseries was reported to the researchers who produced the nurseries. Regional data is posted at the Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory web-site: http://www.ars.usda.gov/News/News.htm?modecode=36-07-05-00 . The complete USDA-ARS nursery data for the Uniform Southern Nursery and the Uniform Eastern Nursery is posted at: http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/docs.htm?docid=2925. ADODR Monitoring: Weekly meetings were held to discuss research and bi-weekly emails.
