Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research
Project Number: 6066-21310-004-00-D
Project Type: In-House Appropriated
Start Date: May 20, 2013
End Date: May 19, 2018
Objective 1: Adapt or develop technologies and tools for ongoing support of crop, animal and insect genotyping for germplasm characterization, breeding, and genetic and molecular analyses. Objective 2: Provide support for crop, animal and insect genome analysis including gene expression profiling and gene discovery. Objective 3: In partnership with Mississippi State University, and in consultation with the Office of National Programs, accelerate the application of genomic technologies for breeding and genetics and microbiome research for agriculture by supporting: (1) Access to new technologies, including new DNA sequencing and biomolecular analysis technologies and computational resources for agriculture; (2) Access to bioinformatic tools, workflows and open data for scientists; (3) Access to training for scientists in bioinformatics for agriculture, including high throughput data management and analysis.
The Genomics and Bioinformatics Research unit conducts research in the area of genomics and bioinformatics for an array of species and topics. It also acts as a fully integrated component of the Mid South Area by providing genomics research support for an array of technologies and research projects. The support includes, but is not limited to high throughput DNA sequencing, gene expression analysis, bioinformatics, DNA marker development, and high throughput genotyping with DNA marker. The centralization of these operations assures that all research projects in the MSA that could benefit from these genomic tools have access to the technology, that there is no unnecessary duplication of equipment within the Area, and there is maximum utilization and conservation of funding.
