Position:  Farm Crew / Summer Temporary

 

The primary purpose of this Research Laboratory is to conduct research in the scientific fields of range management, nutrition, beef cattle genetics and reproductive physiology.  Studies are designed to advance range beef cattle production in the Northern Great Plains. 

 

This position works during the summer months in the farming operation.  The main function is to produce the necessary forage and grain to help support the research animals during the winter feeding months.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of Position:

 

                        General:  This position works from April through October (depending on available funding and labor need) with the irrigated farming operation, with row crops, flood and pivot sprinkler type irrigation.  The crops grown include corn for silage, small grains, grass and alfalfa hay and pasture.  This position is under supervision of the farm supervisor, will irrigate the above mentioned crops using the various irrigation methods.  The incumbent is expected to operate and maintain a wide variety of farm tractors and equipment involved in seed bed preparation, cultivation and harvesting of the above mentioned crops.  This includes some minor repair of farm equipment, livestock corrals and general grounds and building repair and maintenance.

 

            1.         Operation of farm equipment and tractors:  Operates tractors from 25 to 165 horse power in plowing, discing, planting and cultivation of the above mentioned crops.  May also include swather, forage harvesters, silage wagon, farm trucks and other equipment as needed to harvest these crops.

 

            2.         Irrigation:  Uses flood, syphon tube, center pivot and gated pipe to irrigate corn for silage, small grains, hay and pasture.  Move gated pipe, set tubes, set diversion dams, watch irrigation water progress to be sure the most efficient use of the water is made and the crop is properly irrigated.

 

            3.         The incumbent will be expected to participate in minor maintenance and repairs, this will include oil changes for tractors, greasing of equipment, replacing bearings, etc.  Major repairs can be handled by the shop maintenance crew.

 

            4.         Other duties may include grounds keeping, mowing of grounds and general cleaning, branding, fencing, and working of livestock.  Sometimes crews are needed for other projects and farm crew staff participate when the need arises.

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:  The ability to lift heavy weight and work in      adverse weather conditions is required.  Schedules may require work in other than normal hours.  Exposure to sun, heat, damp, wind, pollen and other effects of nature can be expected.  The majority of this positions time is spent outside.
