Education:
Ph.D.
B.S. Huazhong Agricultural University, Horticulture/Forestry, 1977
Research Interests:
His scientific interests are in the areas of plant genetics and biotechnology, especially as related to gene identification and genomics-assisted breeding, genetic mechanisms underlying host resistance to aphids and diseases, and development of dedicated bioenergy crops. The goals of his research are to conduct basic studies to enhance our understanding of biological processes in plants and to apply newly developing biotechnologies to facilitating genetic improvement of crop plants and to improve the production system for a better utilization of agricultural and natural resources.
The current research projects include (1) identification of new sources of insect and disease resistance in sorghum and other related species, (2) development and utilization of DNA markers and other genomic tools for crop genome analysis and marker-assisted selection to facilitate crop breeding research, and (3) characterization and manipulation of bioenergy traits in plants leading to development of superior sorghum varieties/cultivars as renewable feedstocks for biofuel production.
