Paul’s research focuses on grapevine physiology, nutrition, and symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in order to develop sustainable practices that promote plant and soil health and improve fruit quality.

A Pinot noir root that was cleared and stained showing intense colonization by symbiotic, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (in blue). Arbuscules (tree-like structures) are complex structures formed by both the plant and fungus that facilitate nutrient transfer between symbionts.
