RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Serves as Research Leader for the Rangeland Resources and Systems Research Unit with our “Adaptive grazing management and decision support to enhance ecosystem services in the western Great Plains” project in the ARS National Program 215 – Grass, Forage, and Rangeland Agroecosystems.  Personal research objectives are to: (1) determine the potential for adaptive grazing management and the contributions of flexible stocking strategies, adjusted annually based on forecasts weather and forage availability, to the sustainable intensification of livestock production in semiarid rangelands, (2) determine the contribution of genetic variability (source population) in livestock, and its interaction with environmental variability and management strategies in livestock performance and the rumen microbiome, (3) quantify the influences of seasonal-, annual-, and decadal-scale precipitation amounts, variability, and patterns on forage and livestock production, and (4) provide land managers with information and decision tools needed to maintain profitability and environmental sustainability, and reduce risk to livestock operations in a changing climate. The research is expected to lead to novel and urgently needed effective sustainable management strategies for semiarid rangeland social-ecological systems in the face of increasing climatic variability and extremes. These strategies will encompass pioneering blending of precision environmental data with precision spatial and temporal livestock movement, integrating management-science partnerships, science-informed monitoring, and human dimensions and social science for outcome-based livestock grazing strategies in semiarid rangeland social-ecological systems.
