John L Kovar

Research Soil Scientist

I joined the NLAE in December of 1999 as a Research Soil Scientist. My research addresses a range of topics including nutrient management in grain production systems, phosphorus bioavailability in soil and water, root growth and development, soil testing methodology, and water quality improvement. I currently serve as Lead Scientist for the project “Sustainable and Resilient Cropping Systems for Midwestern Landscapes.” I also have a leadership role in the Upper Mississippi River Basin site of the ARS Long-Term Agroecosystems Research (LTAR) Network and hold the rank of Affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University. With support from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, I lived and worked in Germany twice (1996, IGZ, Grossbeeren and 2005, Georg August University, Göttingen). When I am not at the NLAE, I grow flowers and vegetables in my garden and ride my bicycle around town and on the many trails in central Iowa. When it is cold, my model railroad keeps me busy.
