Biography and Research

Joshua Quarterman

Dr. Joshua (Josh) C. Quarterman has worked as a postdoctoral research chemical engineer at ARS in Peoria, IL since 2015.  Currently, his research is focused on identifying, characterizing, and engineering novel yeast strains capable of robust growth and efficient lipid accumulation from biomass-derived mixed sugar streams.  The goal of this work is oriented toward the sustainable production of fatty acid-derived fuels and chemicals from non-food biomass feedstocks.  Previously, Josh received a Ph.D. in Food Science and Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the advisement of Dr. Yong-Su Jin.  During his graduate research, he applied genome-scale models and adaptive evolution to identify new gene targets for metabolic engineering of the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast).  Josh received a B.S. in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA.
