 M.S.  University of Minnesota  1999
 Ph.D.  University of Minnesota  2001

Research Interests:

Current research within Dr. Blumenthal's lab has three primary objectives:

(1) Predict how global change will influence semi-arid rangeland ecosystems. Much of this work focuses on the Prairie Heating and CO2 Enrichment (PHACE) experiment.

(2) Develop durable weed control strategies for rangeland ecosystems. To this end, research is designed to identify mechanisms that drive weed invasion, with particular attention to the simple and interactive effects of increases in resource availability and release from natural enemies. A current example is the study of targeted spring grazing to control cheatgrass in mixed-grass prairie.

(3) Predict plant community responses to both rangeland management and global change using detailed measurements of plant traits. Growing databases of plant traits for mixed-grass prairie and shortgrass steppe include leaf economic, water-relations, and herbivore defense traits.
