Research Objectives

  1. Determine the role of crop residue on soil properties and nutrient cycling. Assess the effect of residue removal on ecosystem services. Develop management practices for sustainable use of crop residue for other uses such as forage, feed, and energy feedstock.
  2. Conduct soil quality assessments and develop soil quality assessment tools. Assess the impact management practices such as tillage, crop rotation, and fertilization have on soil quality. Develop scoring curves for soil indicators for the Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF).
  3. Serve as the co-lead for the Platte River – High Plains Aquifer Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Network site (http://prhpa.unl.edu). The goal of the LTAR network is to ensure sustained crop and livestock production and ecosystem services from agroecosystems, and to forecast and verify the effects of environmental trends, public policies, and emerging technologies. The Platte River – High Plains LTAR site is collaboration between ARS and University of Nebraska Lincoln to leverage resources and expertise to contribute to the LTAR goal for the western Corn Belt and central Great Plains.
