Carolyn's program investigates the influence of nutrition and root- associated organisms on root growth, productivity, and quality of nursery and other specialty crops. The overall goals of her program are to improve knowledge of environmental factors regulating product qualities; and develop cultural practices and strategies that enhance crop productivity and quality through more efficient management of resources.

This research has three primary objectives: 1) Optimize nutrient management for sustainable nursery and specialty crop systems, 2) Develop improved stress tolerance of nursery crops through nutrient and water management, and 3) Investigate physiological roles of mycorrhizal fungi and soilborne plant pathogens on plant growth, nutrient use efficiency, and end-product quality.
