Facilities

The Tree Fruit Research Laboratory possesses one of the finest postharvest research facilities including a pilot-scale packingline facility with a computer-controlled AWETA fruit sizer/sorter, and 130 computer-controlled CA storage chambers.

The laboratory offers state-of-the-art analytical capabilities, including column and gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, UV-VIS diode array spectrometry, identification of bacteria and yeasts by fatty acid methyl ester analysis with the MIDI system, gel electrophoresis, and ultracentrifugation. Other capabilities include polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and associated technologies, DNA sequencing, supercritical fluid extraction of plant components, computerized color determination devices, texture and firmness testing equipment, thin and semi-thin plastic sectioning for light and electron microscopy, microscopic and macroscopic video image analyses, light microscopes with epi-fluorescence and differential interference contrast optics, confocal and scanning electron microscopes, and portable environmental growth growth-monitoring units.
