Project Name:
RHEM: Rangeland Hydrology and Erosion Model
Collaborators:
USDA-ARS Tucson,Boise, and Reno hydrologists and rangeland scientists
Goals/purpose:
RHEM is a process-based model and web tool designed to help land managers and scientists predict runoff and erosion rates on rangelands. Initiated in 2003, the model uses fundamentals of infiltration, hydrology, plant science, hydraulics, and erosion mechanics to
The user interface of the RHEM Web Toolevaluate rangeland characteristics, allowing users to assess the effects of conservation practices and various ecological conditions. Simulations with RHEM support risk assessments and predict the impacts of single-storm events on undisturbed rangeland hillslopes. Ongoing developments continue to expand the model's capabilities to explore snow scenarios, woodland encroachment, and the impacts of fire and vegetation disturbances on erosion processes.
