Project Name:
Mapping flow in non-perennial streams
Collaborators:
Shang Gao, Jessie Pearl, Tiffany Le, Letao Li, Kevin Robles, Pam Nagler, Fern Bromley, Russ Scott
Goals/purpose:
Surface water is a precious resource in drylands. With changing conditions, temporal and spatial patterns of surface water availability may be changing as well, but we have very little data on surface water extent.
Installation of new cameraAlmost all hydrological monitoring infrastructure is positioned on perennial reaches, leaving non-perennial systems very sparsely monitored. Scientists use time-lapse photography to capture surface water presence status at stream reaches in Southern Arizona and evaluate how surface water presence is changing over time. Scientists are also developing techniques to detect surface water presence from high-resolution satellite imagery.
