We at CIU welcome opportunities to partner with private sector businesses, other federal agencies, state and local governments, universities, and its customers. These partnerships are designed to augment research programs, expedite research results to the private sector, exchange information and knowledge, stimulate new business and economic development, and enhance U.S. trade. At present, CIU is collaborating with the following people and organizations on many research projects.

  • Creation of transgenic rubber-producing sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and guayule (Parthenium argentatum) with Colorado State University (CSU) and Arizona State University. Biorisk assessment and risk mitigation tactics for transgenic rubber-producing sunflowers, with CSU and The Ohio State University.

  • Development of castor with reduced ricin toxin and potent allergens to facilitate its reintroduction as an industrial crop in the United States of America. (Dow Chemical)

  • Development of transgenic wheat lines resistant to scab and new lines expected to increase selenium content in wheat flour. (delivered to ARS collaborators)

  • Interspecies studies of rubber-producing plants to increase understanding of early development of rubber-producing plants, the induction of rubber production in plants, and the nature of the rubber transferase enzyme.(The University of Nevada, Reno)

  • Research/development to optimize bioprocessing of guayule (Parthenium argentatum) relating to latex yield and quality. Includes characterization of fractions of process stream for coproduct development. (Yulex Corporation)

  • Use of Arabidopsis transcription factors to increase rubber yield in guayule. (Mendel Biotechnologies)

  • Use of proteomics techniques to aid in identification of the following: nuclear proteins (David Ow, Plant Gene Expression Center), pollen proteins(Sheila McCormick, Plant Gene Expression Center), and thioredoxin target proteins. (Bob Buchanan, University of California at Berkeley)
