Each year, approximately 60 new patents are issued by the U.S. Patent Office for USDA inventions. BETA VULGARIS SERINE PROTEINASE INHIBITOR GENE BVSTI MEDIATES INSECT RESISTANCE IN TRANSGENIC PLANTS
The USDA cloned a sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) gene that we show increases insect resistance in genetically engineered plants.
NOVEL CYTOCHROME P450 ENZYMES FROM SORGHUM BICOLOR
Two cDNA clones, designated SbPRH1 and SbPRH2, were isolated from sorghum that code for cytochrome P450 enzymes that catalyze the formation of benzoquinine sorgoleone, a allelochemical that has the potential of becoming a natural herbicide. The identification of SbPRH1 and SbPRH2 provides new genetic engineering opportunities in plants for altering sorgoleone content and related phenolic lipids in crop plants to potentially generate novel plant germplasm possessing enhanced resistance to diseases and/or the ability to resist weed infestations.
DEVELOPMENT OF VERY EARLY FLOWERING AND NORMAL FRUITING PLUM WITH FERTILE SEEDS
This invention is the development of transgenic plum genotypes to flower very early and produce normal fruits and fertile seeds from pot-grown plum trees to drastically reduce the time interval from seed to seed generation for faster production of improved plum cultivars through conventional breeding, as well as through genetically engineering.
USE OF THE PPTAC1 GENE FOR CONTROLLING TREE ARCHITECTURE

The invention relates to novel methods for carrying out recombinase mediated cassette exchange and uses thereof. This strategy is intended for genome engineering of any crop species. It uses site-specific recombinases for both genome targeted integration and simultaneously marker removal.
